Our progress and our objectives
Increased sustainability is a journey. Georgia-Pacific has a long history in sustainable responsibility and our priority has been to
continually improve our performance in forestry stewardship. Our record in this area is exemplary – and we will work hard to
keep it that way.
We have taken steps forward in other areas as well. Georgia-Pacific’s progress in improving sustainability can also be measured
in some of the following ways:
1. Over the past few years, Georgia-Pacific EMEA has systematically invested in sustainable technology to produce energy. Our manufacturing sites in Italy(Castelnuovo), France (Hondouville and Gien) and the United Kingdom (Bridgend) have all been equipped with a cogeneration system, whereby the heat created as a by-product from electricity generation is used to generate steam with an overall efficiency of around 95%.
2. All manufacturing sites are continuously focusing on maximum waste segregation so that each waste stream can be treated in the most sustainable way using in order of priority: reuse, recycle, sold for beneficial reuse or, if no other solutions are found, landfilling. Our Nokia production site in Finland has reduced its landfilling by more than 50 percent in 2008.
3. We consider social, environmental and economic aspects when we design our products, looking at sustainability aspects and beginning to use techniques such as life cycle analysis. We consider not just our products but also evaluate the packaging materials we use to ensure that they are as environmentally responsible as possible while maintaining the quality of our products.
We have set priorities within each of the three dimensions and our commitments enhance social well-being,
environmental protection and economic prosperity in all aspects of our business.
