Georgia-Pacific talks to its neighbours.

25 November 2009

Aware of the impact an industrial site that co-habits with one or more villages can have on daily life, Georgia-Pacific attaches a lot of importance to creating a dialogue with its neighbours.  Two EMEA mills – Cuijk in the Netherlands and Hondouville in France – have recently held community meetings to share Georgia-Pacific’svision of and commitment to preventing incidents and minimising environmental impact and to present some of its projects affecting the local community. Cuijk has been opening its doors to neighbours over several years and for Hondouville, this was the second edition of its annual community meeting.

Cuijk welcomed 75 residents from the area surrounding the mill and the nearby village of Katwijk. Hondouville welcomed around 90 people, including the mayors and officials from the neighbouring villages of Hondouville, Amfreville-sur-Iton and Acquginy together with more than 40 residents living close to the mill.

At each meeting, Georgia-Pacific’s local environmental coordinators presented work done and work in progress to address the sensitive issue of noise emissions. The Hondouville mill manager also invited the independent environmental tests and measurement agency (the APAVE) to present the results of noise level tests carried out at the mill, who gave neighbours a concrete picture of where Georgia-Pacific stands in relation to statutory noise limits.

The meetings were also a great opportunity to talk about Georgia-Pacific’s approach to sustainability. The company’s Reduce, Re-Use, Recycle program was on the agenda at both events with presentations on reducing CO2 impact and water usage - subjects that have become part of everyday thinking and that the public wants to hear about.
